Many waterfront owners would like to have a dock, but are in a jurisdiction that needs a dock permit. Often these permits can be expensive, hard to acquire, or both. However, in many locations, a waterfront property owner is able to pull a boat up on shore and leave it there indefinitely. So, one solution is to get a boat that actually works like Inflatable Platform, or a dock that can be licensed like a boat. In order to qualify as being a boat it should be an approved vessel based on the guidelines of the U.S. Coast Guard. Quite simply it ought to be a boat from a safety and licensing standpoint. In a few jurisdictions it might be required that your vessel be certified by the National Marine Manufacturers Association.
This method may also work for lakes and waterfront properties which do not allow floating docks at all. By mooring a dock which is disguised as being a boat and installing a gangway now you have essentially a dock even though a governing body would recognize your dock officially as being a vessel.
One of many leading edge approaches to construct a boat that can be utilized as a dock is to use what is called “Rolling Barrel Technologies” which is the utilization of 55 gallon polyethylene plastic drums since the flotation system. The reason why Rolling Barrel Technology is really effective to get a dock/boat set up is since it is light in weight so it will be easily moved with something as little as a 10 horse power outboard motor. The other reason would be that the 55 gallon drums are tremendously buoyant and will also be as stable as Jetski Docks with a similar dimensions. Typically these floating docks come in widths of 4 to 17 feet and have lengths from 8 to 32 feet. For the dock surface, any common deck material can be applied.
Often docks use pilings to hold them in position. However, a permit may be needed for the pilings. As opposed to pilings, the end from the dock can be anchored set up with two anchors that cross under the dock. In this way the anchor line is out of the way of boats pulling up to the dock. If there is some tidal movement, attaching the anchor with mostly chain instead vhprii rope can minimize drifting.
The two main other advantages of using floating dock of the type.
1) The price. Typically these rolling floating dock setups is going to be more affordable compared to a typical dock setup.
2) The portability. Several commercial Air Tracks have highway rated wheel and axle systems that allows the dock to be linked to a standard trailer hitch on the car and towed out of the launch ramp on on the highway. This works great for seasonal situations in which the water freezes through the winter season.
